Cochlear Implants, What are they? How do they work?

Introduction by Julie Leggett from Hearing Help Essex

Did you know that there are over 250,000 cochlear implant users worldwide?  More than 12,000 of these are in the UK.

A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who has a severe or profound hearing loss.  An implant does not cure deafness or hearing loss, but is a prosthetic substitute which directly stimulates the cochlea.

The expectations of how well a cochlear implant will help someone varies from individual to individual.  They are remarkable devices that provide significant improvement to a person’s communication ability, when hearing aids simply are no longer able to help.  Improvements in implantation techniques continue to make remarkable strides and are considered one of the world’s most successful medical prostheses.

Gloria McGregor, founder of Lip Reading Practice shares her fascinating cochlear implant journey for you to read here: Gloria McGregor : Back to the Hearing World
